Inside Unapologetic Projects’ New Los Angeles Office

A team of designers from interior design firm Josef M Design completed a new office design for creative company Unapologetic Projects in Los Angeles, California.

“Not only does Unapologetic Projects’ office have a rich film history as the “birthplace of motion picture comedy,” but it also serves as a collaborative space that artists of color and underrepresented creators in LA can use to host events, shoots and readings. The property that now houses the Unapologetic office was first purchased in the early 1900s by the New York Motion Picture Company and later was sold to “King of Comedy” Mack Sennett in 1912, who turned it into the first permanent movie sound stage built on the West Coast. It was here that Sennett created the slapstick antics of his silent films. Charlie Chaplin also got his start in films here when Sennett hired him in 1914. In 1982, the building was named a Historic Landmark by Hollywood Heritage.

While the original main building of the studio is now used as a public storage facility, the film legacy of the secondary building is being kept alive as the headquarters of Unapologetic Projects. To preserve the history of the space, Unapologetic Projects worked with Josef M Design to create a beautiful office that blends modern touches mixed with antique styles, complete with framed photos of the building’s history to mix past and present.
