Design agency Tétris recently designed a new office interior for beverage company PepsiCo in Johannesburg, South Africa.

“”The Pepsico West, East, and Central Africa (WECA) office in Johannesburg exemplifies an innovative blend of Pepsico’s brand values with the rich design wisdom and culture of Africa. A standout feature of the office is a styled tree, serving as a central pillar around which flexible and informal work settings are arranged. This concept draws inspiration from traditional African villages, where a central communal space fosters interaction and shared activities, surrounded by individual dwellings. This village-green approach aligns with modern workplace research advocating for collaborative spaces that encourage interaction while also providing zones for focused individual work.

The tree is not only an architectural feature but also a symbolic one, prominently used in the reception area and the open-plan workspace. Various flexible meeting spaces, each distinctively furnished, gather under this tree. The decor features brightly colored fabrics reminiscent of traditional African textiles, covering benches, pedestals, and bar stools. Woven pendant lights resembling weaver birds’ nests hanging in trees add an additional layer of cultural flair.

Traditional African string art is employed to create artworks depicting Pepsico’s brand values. Bold geometric shapes painted on the walls reference African art patterns while resonating with the graphic style of Pepsico’s consumer brands. This not only creates a visually stimulating environment but also serves as a constant reminder of the cultural and brand values that underpin the company.

The symbolic tree aligns seamlessly with Pepsico’s commitment to sustainability and its partnership with the farmers who supply the ingredients for its products. Just as the tree’s roots symbolize networks and connections with the earth, its branches and leaves represent the products and the thriving communities that Pepsico helps to build. This design element underscores a deeper narrative of growth, sustainability, and community prosperity, reflective of both African culture and Pepsico’s corporate ethos.”
